Sara McMahon
I started knitting as a young girl inspired by my
mother's adventures with fiber and paints. I was truly
amazed that with two needles (or one) and a piece of
string one could create an article of clothing. Function
creating form as its finest. I was constantly challenged
to maintain a consistent number of stitches which
resulted in many creative and odd shapes! I continued to
knit and crochet off and on throughout my years. I took
it up again while in graduate school as a way to maintain
my focus during class. I soon was teaching other
students, to the dismay of the faculty, and found myself
the shared owner of sheep! Although I always admired the
classic knitters, those warm little sweaters!...I soon
was made aware that this was not the relationship with
knitting/crocheting that would follow. I must admit I
continue to drawn to a pattern or two! However quickly
find myself taking detours! So I have learned to follow
my instincts and am most content improvising. Watching
the fiber move in, out, and around the needles creating
relationships between color, direction, texture, and
shape. Very similar to my other creative endeavor that of
a movement artist.
