Emily Johansen
As far back as I remember I’ve wanted to create art from
what pleases my eye. The look of light and temperature
always made me wish I could express those personal
sensory experiences in images. I live in the mountains in
the beautiful state of Vermont and am also blessed with a
summer home on the coast of Maine. The colors and images
of these places have informed many of my paintings since
I began painting in watercolor in 2001. I found balance
between my business career and my desire to paint and
have devoted more and more time to painting, attending
classes and workshops in Vermont, Maine, and in Italy.
The glories of color, and the considerations of light and
composition, mesmerize me. I embarked on my sensory quest
to paint what I felt about what I saw. My work primarily
celebrates my life in Vermont, my yearly experience of
the Maine coast, and my deep appreciation of nature’s
gift of seasonal change. Now I paint as an avenue to
communicate my feelings about place. If my work gives
pleasure to others I am gratified and encouraged. In
August, 2009 I was “artist of the month” at our town
library, where I showed a series of my Maine inspired
watercolors. As a contributing member of Central Vermont
Artists’ Marketing Cooperative, I show my work regularly
at Blinking Light Gallery in Plainfield, Vermont, and
serve on the Board of Directors. I also have displayed my
work at Studio Place Arts Gallery in Barre, Vermont, and
in shows of the Art Resource Association, in the T.W.
Wood Gallery at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in,
Montpelier, Vermont.
